I got a great piece of advice from someone whom I really respect and admire. I’ve been thinking about it and I think this blog is a perfect place to pass it along: “sometimes the best response is no response at all.” It’s simple really, but it made me think.

pizza

My weakness is pizza. I could eat pizza everyday for a week and it wouldn’t bother me at all. In fact, I could probably eat any food for a week and I wouldn’t be bothered. I’m sure this is due to my days as a bachelor living alone. My philosophy was to make a big batch and have it last for a few days. It’s easier to warm up a plate day after day than to start from scratch and cook something new. I’m not a picky eater and that’s why it doesn’t bother me. My wife likes to tell people I’d eat poop if it didn’t smell bad.

Back to pizza, not all pizza is created equal. When my wife and I moved to Townsend, MA http://www.townsend.ma.us/ten years ago, there were no good pizza shops. About 5 years ago, Pizza Pizzazz http://http://www.insiderpages.com/b/3715595124opened on Main Street and we have been loyal customers ever since. Today we decided to use a coupon we got in the mail for a competing pizza shop by the name of Patriot Pizza http://www.patriotpizzasubs.com. We got a large meatball pizza, a side order of fries, and a side order of chicken wings all for $15. The deal seemed pretty good so we gave it a try. The heart of the meal was certainly the pizza and that was the problem, it just wasn’t very good. My wife and I agreed the crust tasted like it had been frozen for a while, the sauce had no zip, and the cheese seemed a little thin. I guess you get what you pay for…

My favorite pizza shop of all time was Tony & Anne’s in North Chelmsford, MA. It was right on Rte 4 heading out of Vinal Square towards Tyngsboro. As a kid, I remember eating Tony & Anne’s pizza with my dad while watching TV. We’d wash it all down with an ice cold root beer. Now that was living! Tony & Anne’s would close down for the winter each year. I think this was probably because the owners went south to avoid the cold weather. Before they closed in the late fall, my Dad would buy 6 pizzas and freeze them so that we’d be stocked for the upcoming winter. Now that’s the sign of a good pizza – even frozen it was better than other shop’s fresh pizza. Unfortunately, Tony & Anne’s closed many years ago. I will never forget their sweet sauce and brown boxes.
